Community Reporting Tools: What does hate look like?
Amplifying voices
Using FBI hate crime data alone leads to a severe underrepresentation of the true experience that communities have with hate and discrimination. Due to the limitations of the FBI hate crime data as described on the Anti-Asian Hate & Data Limitations page, AAPI-serving community organizations have created community reporting tools to fill the data and reporting gap.
Community reporting sites such as Stand Against Hatred and Stop AAPI Hate create safe options for community members to report incidents of hate. These tools also collect more data on different types of anti-Asian incidents that are significantly broader than ones reported to the FBI Hate Crime tracker. This allows for a more comprehensive understanding of the hate incidents that occur against AAPI community members.
Importantly, the organizations supporting these tools are able to offer support and provide referrals to culturally relevant and linguistically appropriate resources to those who report.
